GOLDEN
LEGEND
.
.
f*%t
In my travels I have happened upon Saint Leo, tucked
away in peace among orange groves and gentle hills.
Somewhere in the midst of my luggage, I have brought
my soul, carefully cushioned by its protections.

There is also my personal mask, brought to meet those
like it. In silence we first greet each other, all of us
hiding that secret being we know to be there. Months
continue passing by and we share laughter and the
external gifts of ourselves.

Occasionally, grief is the cause of our
coming together. Inevitably, our soul
protests to prison, in a plea to find a
positive support from those we have
wanted to love the most.

In whatever role we choose to play,
there are those who applaud us from
which we draw our strength.
13
Eventually when we have lost some
of the harshness of this permanent
masquerade party, there comes the
renewing over and over again of
our discovering both the deep
joy and sorrow of living found
here, whether it be the present or
behind us.

DR. M. L. HOWE
DIVISION OF
LANGUAGE AND
LITERA TURE
A man dedicated, not only to
teaching English but to
helping St. Leo and all its
students grow to their own
true potential.
Doc Howe's famous hat . . .
cheering on the basketball team,
"get going ya crooks" . . . "come
see me in my cell, I mean office"
. . . Singing his way across
campus ... a smile, a laugh, a
SMACK on the back . . .
You have touched us, not
only with your mind, but with
your heart, and for this we
thank you.
To show our appreciation for all he
has given to St. Leo, we sincerely
dedicate Golden Legend, '73 to Dr.
M. L. Howe.

Cheerleaders
The spirit and enthusiasm of the
cheerleaders brought the much needed
support our soccer, football and basketball
teams deserved.
Remembering the rallys, practices,
"Onward On Saint Leo", the Atlanta road
trip, and the response of the fans all added
to a successful year.
Thanks go to Ms. Hertz, moderator, Deni
DiMisa, captain, Diane Johnson, co-

support of this year's sports teams.

The soccer schedule of 8-4-1 this year has been one of the best ever. Coach John Swart, seniors Carmen Santoro,
captain and All Conference, Bobby Baker, All Conference, Rick Ammean, Jimmy Crane, Bob Martin, and the rest of the
squad can be commended for their good competition.
In remembering the events of the soccer months, "hot dog", end of the season's "everyone in the pool," Crane's party
and Florida Southern (how could we ever forget!), added to make this past season a great one. By working together as a
team, the victories always meant more.

For the first time since Saint Leo was a
prep school, the campus could boast a
football team.
To start club football after so many years
took the coach and team a great deal of
determination and courage. Coach Jo Sico
and the squad had both.
Playing some of the toughest teams
around still saw Saint Leo drive hard to the
finish and never give up.
For this first at Saint Leo, we are all very
proud of this particular team — and their
dedicated work.

Queen Candidates, /. to r.: Trish Walsh, Linda Diana, Bernie Coyne, Cindy Baker, Patty Binninger, Judy Hainline, Rosa Espinosa, Peggy Russell.
Homecoming
The first Alumni Homecoming was held during the half-time of
the Westchester game. The candidates for Queen were chosen by the
work each contributed to school. Two young women were chosen
from each class.
Cindy Baker was selected Queen, and presented with flowers and
her crown. Following the coronation, the karate team presented a
fine exhibition.
At the conclusion of the game, all welcomed the Mad Hatters at
the Cage for post-game festivities.

Karate
Karate is one sport at Saint Leo that has grown in popularity in recent years.
Both the Fosters and the team have put on some excellent demonstrations this
past year.

The basketball team this year went
through their own trials and
tribulations as the Monarchs closed
their season with 12 wins and 13
losses.
Coach Norm Kaye and graduating
players, Capt. Arnie and Daytona
John, along with the rest of the team
will always remember how they all
contributed not only to the night the
fans finally responded, but to a very
interesting season.

Golf at Saint Leo has developed into quite a sport
among those on campus.
Playing in many different tournaments and
invitationals, the golf team made a good showing this
year.
Coach Neal Earls, senior player Windy LaChappelle

recognition.

Tennis is the sport for people to watch. Its recent
popularity brought out the rest of us who were out to
witness the skill of our own team.
Their success this year has been gradually
building throughout the season by much hard work
and practice.
Coach Tim Crosby, senior Mark Steward and the
other members of the team have sincerely done well
in their progression.

When we have finally reached that point
where faces are no longer just faces, and the
people here have become intertwined into
our very selves, we are partially able to
understand something of our own natures.
With this knowledge, we may begin to
realize how far we have come from being
life's children, and how far we have yet to
go-

Afterword
It has been my pleasure to work with a fine group
of people this year who have been dedicated enough
to give of their free time to assist in creating this
volume of the GOLDEN LEGEND. My special
thanks go out to Br. Bernard, savior and advisor, the
Wisemans of Dade City for their part in our
photography needs, and Ron Binns of Taylor
Publishing Company for smoothing out all the
rough edges. Many of the staff have been especially
great with their cooperation, especially Marji,
Peggy, Swak, John, Chris and Ursula, who were
there when I needed them. The Student Affairs Staff
for their moral support, and the Finance Office for
their patience and understanding are to be
commended.
I hope that this volume of the annual is enjoyable
to those who have waited for it with interest, and
that they will look kindly on any mistakes we failed
to correct.
To those who cared enough about what was
taking place in Rm. 114 St. Ed's, thank you for all
your support. This unquestioning faith was perhaps
the most important reward I as an individual could
ask for, and I am confident that the next GOLDEN
LEGEND editor will be deserving of it also.
Another edition has been added to the shelf, but
its completion does not end the close group spirit
and friendships that were created along with it.
